The Random Blog
I went to do some laundry tonight, and discovered that someone in my building had ditched a bunch of stuff in the laundry room. I'm fairly certain it was a woman from the 4th floor, who got on the elevator with a box of the red glasses you see in the picture below. Most of the stuff was either complete junk, or stuff no one wants, like the massive set of red glasses. However I did find something that looked too cool to pass up, and with some effort, I attacked it with rubbing alcohol to try and clean it. At the very least its not gross anymore. There's not a lot of info out on the great wide internet about this little guy (not actually that much smaller then the green monster that is my Swingline (like the orange transparent plastic one, but in lime green)). What I could figure out was this guy was made in the late 1940s-early 1960s, and apparently was built to last the ages in New Jersey, Before you ask, there was a Mercury Sr model as well, which I can only assume was bigger, maybe a larger capacity. Similar models seem to be selling on ebay for $15-20 US, so it's not likely I found the holy grail of staplers, but it's got a fun retro vibe too it. It does take modern standard staples, although only about half of the standard length will fit in with it's unique tape measure style retention system. It seems to staple well, easily putting staples through a few layers of cookie box packaging. I really like the character of this guy, and he definitely improves the class of my office. Once Random Geek home base is better set up I shall show him off in his home, but for now I shall put him to work, stapling documents when the need arrises. I shall leave you with the only video I could find, a nice restoration that I may attempt one day. Till next time!
